On November 18, 2023, the STI team enthusiastically engaged in a volunteering activity at the Green Point Mandala Depot in Medan. The purpose extended beyond merely separating and categorizing waste for recycling; it aimed to introduce the virtues upheld by Tzu Chi to the participants. As a result of this activity, the STI team not only became environmentally conscious volunteers but also actively participated in a voluntary program, contributing to a charity fund supporting humanitarian goals.

STI’s volunteering activity at the Tzu Chi Mandala Depot revolves around the concept of environmental responsibility. The team played an active role in segregating waste for recycling, including compacting used cans and plastic bottles. Subsequently, they participated in a brief sharing session introducing the Mandala Depot and the virtues embraced by Tzu Chi.

The Tzu Chi Mandala Depot, inaugurated on April 8, 2012, serves as a primary hub for environmental conservation and recycling of unused items in the Medan area. In this mission, the focus is on segregating recyclables, guided by the motto “turning waste into gold, gold into love, and love flowing throughout the world.”
In environmental conservation, Tzu Chi applies the 5 R concept: Rethink, Reduce, Repair, Reuse, and Recycle. Through this concept, Tzu Chi encourages reducing desires, appreciating blessings, and extending the lifespan of items. To address waste-related issues, Tzu Chi urges active community participation in reducing plastic usage

Through awareness and tangible actions, we can build a better environment for future generations and sustain the Earth. Volunteering activities like this represent concrete steps toward environmental preservation and the realization of humanitarian values advocated by Tzu Chi. After concluding the event and returning from the Mandala Depot, the STI team concluded the day with a shared meal at Pecel Lele Bintang 3 Eatery. This moment provided an opportunity to strengthen the bonds among team members and celebrate the success of their volunteering efforts.
